What's new in Firetool

Installed copies update themselves: Firetool shows these notes when a new version is ready.

Version 2.24.1 Latest

  • Help → About shows the website and support@firetool.in; Send email writes to support, and Copy details copies the version and system.
  • Diagnostics and problem reports no longer include the developer's contact details or a phone number.
  • Report a problem says plainly what the diagnostics contain (computer name, folder paths, project IDs and account emails).

Version 2.24.0

  • A new icon bar at the bottom of the sidebar: Saved queries, Tasks (with how many are running), Audit log, Settings and Report a problem. Adding an account is in the + menu at the top.
  • Saved queries open and close from the star icon, so the project tree has more room.
  • Menus near the bottom of the window open upwards.

Version 2.23.2

  • Continue with Google opens Google's sign-in page at once and shows Firetool's name (it no longer starts the Google Cloud CLI first).
  • The trial counts calendar days: 30 on the day it starts, 29 the next day, and "ends today" on the last day.

  • Firetool's contact details now use its own firetool.in addresses (contact@ and support@).
  • The licence agreement is version 4: its contact is contact@firetool.in.

  • Firetool's website is now https://firetool.in: updates, trials and licences are checked there.
  • Firetool asks before using a Google Cloud CLI sign-in it finds, and Add account offers every way to connect.
  • Indexes: right-click a collection for its indexes, with collection and field names suggested.

  • New Tasks list (Tools, Tasks): see each longer job's progress and what it cost in Firestore reads, writes and deletes.
  • Every dialog now has a close button at the top right.
  • A tab that was open when Firetool closed now reopens properly.

Version 2.21.0

  • Turning the computer's clock back no longer extends a trial or licence.
  • Everything is now called Firetool, including the data folder (~/.firetool); your settings, keys and tabs move across by themselves.
  • The trial's 6-digit code goes into six boxes.
  • Installer files are all named Firetool-<version>-<system>.

  • The free Pro trial is now 30 days. Trials already running keep their end date.
  • The licence agreement is version 3.

  • Clearer licence window during the trial: after the code it says the trial has started and that there's nothing else to enter. The licence key form is under I have a licence key.
  • Authentication lists users as soon as it opens, newest first.
  • Day one of the trial shows 60 days left.

Version 2.20.0

  • The Pro trial now starts with your email: the first time Firetool opens, enter your email and the 6-digit code we send you. Continue with Free skips it; Help → Licence starts it later.
  • A welcome email when the trial starts, and reminders 7 days and 1 day before it ends.
  • Existing trials and licences carry on unchanged.

Version 2.19.0

  • Data transfer: copy chosen collections from one project or database to another, with subcollections, custom target paths, a limit per collection, and the option to add only new documents. Stop and resume any time.
  • Project settings: right-click a project or database to mark it Read-only or Production. The sidebar shows which ones are marked.
  • Production now also asks for the project ID before bulk changes (copies, transfers, imports, field changes) and new indexes. Editing one document doesn't ask.
  • Smaller Windows download.

Version 2.18.0

  • Firestore Studio is now called Firetool, with a new icon. Your settings, keys, sign-in, schedules, audit log and licence all carry on.
  • Updating removes the old Firestore Studio program and shortcuts; scheduled exports are set up again under the new name by themselves.
  • The licence agreement is version 2: only the name changed.

Version 2.17.2

  • Menus keep a normal width: long notes wrap and long names are shortened; Live's explanation is behind an info icon
  • Live refreshes every 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute or 5 minutes
  • Delete collection and production confirmations enable their button only when the name is typed exactly
  • Rename and Duplicate collection show the current and the new name; the project picker opens at once

Version 2.17.1

  • Edits in the query bar count only after Run, and unsaved editor edits are kept when you switch tabs
  • Safer bulk actions: collection-group copies keep full paths, and replacing documents in an existing collection asks first
  • Delete selected can delete only the rows the search shows; mixed-type columns sort the way Firestore does
  • Fixes for is-not-null filters, script timestamps, and geopoints in CSV

Version 2.17.0

  • Set, rename or delete a field in every matching document (right-click a column), with a preview first, exact types and restorable copies
  • A document someone changed after the preview is never overwritten; the change runs in batches you can stop and resume
  • Project and database picker in the query bar: move the same query to another project or database in one click
  • See the cost before big reads: exports, copies and field changes over 10,000 documents ask first

Version 2.16.0

  • Security: data in a database can never run as code in the window, and JS Query scripts can't read files or start programs
  • Fixes data loss: documents in a subcollection named documents, Move with skip-existing, and saving after someone deleted the document
  • Escape stops a running copy, move, import or delete instead of hiding it; imports and Delete collection can be stopped and resumed
  • Safer policy: bulk-delete limits count the whole operation, exports are checked before anything is read, and the audit log stays intact with scheduled exports
  • Fixes: IN filters keep quoted values as text, Duplicate keeps exact types, scheduled export clean-up keeps other schedules' files

Version 2.15.0

  • Easier install on a Mac: one Terminal command downloads, checks and installs Firestore Studio, without macOS calling it damaged
  • Clearer sign-in screen: what a service account is for, and exactly what Sign out signs out of
  • Ready for signing in with Google straight from the app, without the Google Cloud CLI (switched on in a coming update)

Version 2.14.0

  • Composite indexes: see, create and delete a database's indexes (Tools menu). When a query needs an index, one click fills it in for you.
  • Documents read: the status bar counts the documents read per project, roughly what Firestore bills, so an expensive query stands out.
  • Help > Report a problem: send a message to support, with the diagnostics and the end of the log if you choose (you can see exactly what's sent).
  • Index changes are Pro, blocked for viewers, confirmed on production projects, and recorded in the audit log.

Version 2.13.1

  • No more freezing with big results: tables, JSON and tree views show 500 rows at a time, long values are shortened, and search waits for a pause in typing.
  • Live refresh stays light: it re-reads at most the first 500 rows and keeps them on screen if a refresh fails.
  • No more long waits on a bad network or after sleep: sign-in renewals give up after 20 seconds and old connections are replaced.
  • The audit log is read in the background, so a large log no longer pauses the app.
  • Fixes: totals now match a sorted table, JSON merge import keeps a map's other fields, and stopping a script releases its transaction.

  • Exact values everywhere: large integers keep every digit, and whole-number doubles, NaN and Infinity stay doubles, in the table, editor, imports, filters and scripts
  • Table cell edits save only that field, keep its type and ask first if someone else saved the document
  • Back up a collection or every collection with subcollections, exactly as stored, and restore it to the same or another project
  • Match all or any filter, and Totals: count, sum or average everything a query matches without loading it
  • Imports never add the same item twice, even after Resume; JSON import can update just the fields in the file
  • JS Query: transactions, aggregations, vector search and query explain; Authentication: password reset and verification links

Version 2.12.0

  • Safe saves in the JSON editor: only the fields you changed are saved, so the rest of the document is never rewritten
  • Types are kept exactly: doubles such as 10.0 stay doubles, large integers keep every digit, timestamps keep their microseconds
  • If someone else saved a document since you opened it, you're asked before anything is overwritten
  • Automatic retries when Firestore is busy or briefly unavailable; writes are never sent twice
  • Copy, duplicate, rename, move and delete of big collections, and Duplicate database, can Resume where they stopped

  • Right-click a collection to rename, duplicate, copy, move or delete it, count its documents, export or import
  • Right-click a database (or a project) to duplicate the whole database into another one, export every collection, or add a collection

  • Right-click a tab to close it, the tabs beside it, the others or all of them, or duplicate it (Ctrl+W closes a tab)

  • Licence emails have a clearer, easier-to-read design

  • Opens straight into its window, without the Start Firestore Studio? question
  • Help → Licence now says clearly what happened: key sent, no licence for that email, wrong key and more
  • Confirmations such as deleting documents use Firestore Studio's own dialogs

  • 60-day Pro trial: every new computer gets all Pro features for 60 days, starting the first time it opens
  • Licence keys are emailed to you; enter your email and key in Help → Licence. Lost it? Choose Email me my key
  • One licence works for one person on one computer; Move it to this computer takes it to a new PC
  • Audit log, Scheduled exports and Policy and roles are now in the Tools menu (Ctrl+Shift+L, Ctrl+Shift+E, Ctrl+Shift+P)
  • Firestore Studio now comes with its licence agreement, shown when you install it

  • Free and Pro editions: browsing and querying are free; a Pro licence adds editing, import, export, JS Query, Authentication changes and scheduled exports
  • Help → Licence: enter your email and licence key. A licence works on one computer and can be moved with Deactivate this computer
  • The licence is checked once each time Firestore Studio opens and keeps working for 7 days offline

  • Right-click accounts, projects and collections for Refresh, Add project, Remove from sidebar, Sign out and more
  • New + button at the top of the sidebar to sign in, add a service account, an emulator or a project
  • Faster start-up: your project list appears straight away and refreshes in the background
  • Faster Google sign-in, with a message showing each step while it works

Version 2.6.0

  • Sign out of your Google account from the File menu or the sidebar, and switch to another account
  • Add a project by its ID, or remove one from the sidebar (with a confirmation); removed projects can be shown again
  • Signing in with Google shows the sign-in link if your browser didn't open, and can be cancelled
  • Release notes in the Help menu and in About
  • The download page asks where you heard about Firestore Studio (optional)

Version 2.5.0

  • Collection names are suggested as you type a path, including subcollections and document IDs
  • Much faster first connection: about 3 seconds instead of 8
  • Connecting no longer starts gcloud in the background, which could briefly show a console window

  • Update now asks only for your name and email, like the website
  • New optional box to get emails about new features (off unless you tick it)
  • An address saved by an earlier version is removed

  • Updates from inside the app: Firestore Studio checks for new versions when it opens and every 6 hours, and Update now installs them while keeping your settings
